Sixers on their way to the No. 1 pick in the 2008 draft

Andre IguodalaThe Sixers kick off the NBA season Wednesday, October 31 by visiting Toronto.  The "experts" at ESPN.com are picking the Sixers to finish dead last in the Eastern Conference.  Nobody expects the Sixers to come close to making the playoffs.  If the Sixers do finish last in the East, the potential of landing the No. 1 pick is normally good news for a franchise trying to rebuild, but next year there aren't any Greg Odens or Kevin Durants in the draft.

But there are a few good things that can come out of this year.  First, we get to see if Andre Iguodala is the type of star this franchise can build itself around.  The Sixers only have a few more days to get a deal done with Iguodala or else they will have to wait until the summer to work out a deal with him when his stock will presumably be much higher.  Second, as many experts agree, we will begin to see the emergence of Louis Williams.  Many think Louis Williams is this year's Monta Ellis.  I agree.  Third, Jason Smith could end up being a bright spot for the team.  If Andre Miller can utilize Smith's combination of size and speed on fast breaks, Smith can make an impact this year.  Fourth, the team is young and raw.  Nobody expects them to do anything this year, but this year will be vital to build chemistry and gain experience for these youngsters.

Louis Williams gives Sixers fans hope

Louis WilliamsIn case you don't know, now you know: Louis Williams is a star on the rise.  This year Louis Williams, a 2nd round selection in the 2005 NBA draft, will be entering his 3rd NBA season and I expect that more people will become more familiar with the man who holds the Naismith Prep Player of the Year Award (an award that has an impressive list of names including: Kobe Bryant, Lebron James, Dwight Howard, Chris Webber, Jason Kidd, and Greg Oden).

Towards the end of the 2007 season we started to see glimpses of what Louis Williams was capable of: in the final five games of the season Williams was averaging 12.5 PPG and 5.6 APG in limited minutes.

Williams' play in the NBA summer league was outstanding and he kept it up in the preseason.  This preseason Williams has averaged 16.6 PPG, 4.0 APG, 3.2 RPG, and 1.2 SPG.

I'm already on the Louis Williams bandwagon.  Hopefully we will continue to see Louis Williams, who turns 21 this October, develop into the the superstar he has the ability to turn into.

Sixers acquire Reggie Evans, working on Iguodala extension

Andre IguodalaThe NBA season is just around the corner and some good things are developing.  Billy King actually made a good trade by picking up Reggie Evans, a proven rebounding machine, from Denver in exchange for Steven Hunter and Bobby Jones, two players who I won't miss much.  Last season Evans averaged 7.2 rebound per game despite only playing 17.1 minutes per game: that is solid rebounding production.  Rebounding is an area where the Sixers need a lot of help: last year they ranked 24th.

The Sixers are also working on reaching an extension with Andre Iguodala.  The Sixers have until October 31st to work out a deal or else they will not be able to negotiate with Iguodala until July.  Iguodala has two more years left on his current contract.  Billy King better make it happen; he is in the final year of his contract and the pressure is mounting.

In other Sixers news, Aaron McKie has been added as an assistant coach.

Sixers Summer League Report: Rod Carney, Thaddeus Young, and Jason Smith

Louis Williams is the stud of the young Philly players; Williams leads the summer league in PPG (having played in more than one game), avegeraging 25.2 PPG.  Here are how the other young Sixers players are shaping up.

Rod Carney:
Carney's perimeter jump shot has improved tremendously.  After a shaky start to the summer league, Carney had a few excellent games, and ended up averaging 17.6 points.  If defenders have to play up on him because of his jumper, he's been able to explode to the basket.

Thaddeus Young:
The consensus seems to be that he won't be able to contribute much this season, but that won't stop him from becoming a great basketball player.  He has some ball handling issues and his jumper needs work, but he explodes well to the baskett, plays with aggressiveness, and doesn't seem out of place amongst older players.

Jason Smith:
His upside looks positive, he'll just need to get stronger to play in the NBA.  He has a good mid-range jumper.

Bobby Jones: Might struggle to make the team.

Derrick Byars:  Looks good on defense.

Herbert Hill: Played well in the paint, but is a long shot to make the team.

Louis Amundson: Played well, averaged 14.5 PPG and 8.5 RPG.

It looks like the Thaddeus Young and Jason Smith picks will pay off in the end, but its even better news that Rod Carney has improved significantly and Louis Williams is just ridiculous.  I like what the young players are doing.

Sixers Summer League Report: Louis Williams continues to impress

Louis Williams Sixers NewsNow that the NBA's Summer League has been going on for a few weeks, the picture on how players are shaping up is becoming more clear.

Louis Williams:

It seems to me that Louis Williams is the stand-out player of the bunch; he will be the Sixers player to watch next year.

In the summer league this year, Williams has averaged 25.2 points and simply cannot be stopped going to the basket.  Next year Williams will be the back-up to Andre Miller, and if his development continues, it looks like the Sixers will be very pleased with him as their future point guard.

Williams was the Sixers 2005 2nd round selection, who averaged 4.3 PPG and 1.8 APG in 11.3 minutes as a rookie.  He started to really turn up his game down the stretch of the season, averaging 12.5 PPG and 5.6 APG in his final 5 games.

Look for his minutes to increase significantly this season, possibly to the point where he'll take over as the starter, as Andre Miller could be placed on the trading block.  Williams may turn out to be a real second round gem for the Sixers.  You also have to remember this player was drafted out of high school and won't be turning 21 until October.  He also won the Naismith Award, signifying the nationís top high school player, an honor shared by LeBron James, Greg Oden, Dwight Howard, and Kobe Bryant!

I'm already jumping on the Louis Williams bandwagon and I like how the Sixers roster is shaping up.  Williams will be a key part of the Sixers turn-around.  From what I've seen from Williams in the summer league, combined with what we already know about Iguodala, and the potential Rod Carney and Thaddeus Young show, the Sixers will be a very exciting team to watch in the future.  I'm all about trading Andre Miller and letting this young Sixers team grow up together.  Louis Williams will have a break-out year this season.

You can view a sick dunk Louis Williams threw down in the summer league here.

Joe Smith signs with Bulls

Bulls sign Joe SmithThe 76ers lost forward Joe Smith to the Bulls, a team who was rumored to be very interesting in adding Smith for a long time.  Smith signed a two-year $10 million dollar deal with the team.  After being acquired in the Allen Iverson trade, Smith averaged 9.2 points and 6.7 rebounds in 25 minutes a game for the Sixers.  All the Sixers were able to offer Smith was a 3-year deal for $10 million.

Very good move for the Bulls, who add another piece to an already solid team.  Tough break for the Sixers, their young players are just going to have to grow up sooner than later.  The Sixers will surely miss his leadership and veteran savvy.  Here's an article on listing all the reasons why Smith is a great teammate.

One less reason to criticize Billy King: He didn't pay Darko $21 million

Sixers Darko MilicicBilly King has a history of overpaying players that ultimately don't live up to their pay check, but now there's one less reason to criticize his questionable decision making: he didn't give Darko Milicic a 3-year $21 million contract like the Memphis Grizzilies did.  The Sixers were rumored to be interested in acquiring Darko, but probably balked at the idea of paying him $21 million.

Although Darko hasn't proved that he can make it in the NBA yet, this is a high-risk/high-reward signing, which isn't a terrible call for Memphis.  Darko, at times, shows signs of potential, and the 22-year-old could certainly develop soon, but I'm certainly glad the Sixers didn't shell out the money on him.

I like how the Sixers front-court could shape up with Jason Smith and Derrick Byars.  Couple them along with a couple of explosive, athletic players like Iguodala, Rod Carney, and Thaddeus Young, and I like the direction the Sixers are going.  They somehow need to find a point guard.  Considering Andre Miller is 31 and in the last year of his contract, I think the Sixers should let him go, maybe even trade him if the Sixers know he's going to walk after this season.  Gilbert Arenas becomes a free agent next summer, do you think the Sixers could lure him away from Washington?

Sixers sign Thaddeus Young and Jason Smith

Sixers Tahddeus YoungThe Sixers came to terms with two of their first round selections.  They have signed Thaddeus Young and Jason Smith.   Young will make $1.525 million in the first year of his contract and $1.640 million in the second. Smith will make a little over $1 million both seasons. The 76ers hold options for third and fourth years on both players.

The option on Thaddeus Young seems like the way to go; the Sixers don't expect him to step in right away, rather they drafted him based on his potential so don't expect him to have an active role as a Sixer until his third year.

Young will have to go through an undjustment period to transition his game to the NBA.  Young said he's used to running all the time in college to take advantage of his explosiveness, but in the NBA coaches are telling him to slow things down.

In more positive Thaddeus Young news, he scored 20 points and had 10 rebounds in his last summer league game.  He showed that he has NBA three-point range (2 for 4) and that he is more than just a slasher.

Milwaukee likely to sign Yi Jianlian, will the Sixers acquire anyone else?

SIxers Yi JianlianIt looks like the Sixers hopes of acquiring Yi Jianlian have come to an end.  Yi should be making a deal with Milwaukee soon

The Sixers also focusing on re-signing unrestricted free agent Joe Smith.  Smith is also drawing interest from Chicago, Houston, and Boston.

I doesn't look like the Sixers will be making too many changes to the roster before the season starts.  There is the possibility of signing Darko Milicic, but it would be a wiser move to save the cap room for the deep unrestricted free agent class that will be available next summer.  The free agents available next season include Kevin Garnett, Shawn Marion, Gilbert Arenas, Baron Davis, and Jermaine O'Neal.

In other Sixers news, 2005 2nd round pick, Louis Williams, had a gem of a game last Monday.  Williams put up 23 points, 9 rebounds, and 7 assists.  Rod Carney, the Sixers 2005 1st round pick, also had a solid performance, contributing 30 points.  Of course this is the summer league, but it's great news to see these young players develop.  I'm really liking the young nucleus of the Sixers players.

Thaddeus Young and Jason Smith get thumbs down in debut

NBA's summer league kicked off and the review on the Sixers first two picks weren't good.  Yahoo Sports! wrote an article on five players who were impressive in their debut and four players who were disappointing in their debut.  Thaddeus Young and Josh Smith were two players who were on the receiving end of the disappointing reviews.

Here is what the article said about Thaddeus Young, "Young did not do anything to warrant being drafted 12th overall in a 65-61 win over San Antonio. He seemed out of place on the court and finished with a mere five points and two rebounds in 25 minutes."

Then the article went on to talk about Jason Smith, "Smith really struggled with the speed of the game and only finished 1-for-6 from the floor with two points. The 7-footer is athletic enough to do well in the NBA but just needs an adjustment period."

Don't read too much into it the poor reviews, it was only their first game and even Greg Oden and Jeff Green received poor reviews.
