Flyers beat Ovechkin in OT

What a start for the Flyers!  They’ve improved their record to 3-0 to start the season.  Last night they beat the Washington Capitals 6-5 in overtime thanks to a Daniel Briere game-winning goal on his 32nd birthday.  Mike Richards had a hat trick in the game, the second hat trick of his career.  What a game! Check out the highlights.

Philadelphia: Where Amazing Happens

Pretty incredible video put together by The 700 Level.  Flyers get their first win in the Pittsburgh series.  Phillies win with walk-off homer.  Sixers stun the Magic by overcoming an 18-point deficit to win the game in the last second.

Flyers vs. Penguins Starts Tonight

The Eastern Conference Finals start tonight.  The puck drops at 7:30 on the Versus Network.

The bad news: Kimmo Timonen may be out for the series.  He has a blood clot in his left foot

The good news: Bill Clement is picking the Flyers in seven and Penguins fans (ala the Montreal fans via extreme rioting) have jinxed themselves.

Flyers win series against Canadiens, advance to Eastern Finals

Crazy game.  Montreal drew first blood to gain their first lead ever in this series.  Umberger tied it up later in the first by deflecting in his own rebound sliding on his knees — ridiculous goal.  Check out the video of the goal.  Umberger is so hot right now: that’s was his 7th goal of this series and his 8th came later!  The Canadiens then jumped to a 3-1 lead.  The Flyers then tied it with goals from Richards and Umberger.  Hartnell got the Flyers the lead before Montreal was able to tie it at 4.  With 3:04 left in the 3rd, the Flyers put the game away with a goal from Upshall.  Flyers win 6-4.  Biron was outstanding.  The Penguins, who have a 3-1 lead over the Rangers, are likely to be next.

Flyers win Game 7 against Capitals, Canadiens are next

After hearing nothing but criticism and skepticism that the Flyers wouldn’t move past the Capitals, the Flyers have proved all the naysayers wrong.  In game 7, after being up 3-1 in the series, the Flyers were finally able to close out the series by beating the Capitals in overtime 3-2.  The Flyers missed a huge 2-man advantage opportunity late in the 1st period.   The period ended 1-1.  Each team had two more goals in the 2nd period.  Ovechken had a nasty slapshot, it was an absolute laser-beam off his stick.  The Flyers then dodged about 50 bullets in the 3rd by missed chances.  Finally, in overtime, Lupul was able to grab a rebound and put it right in the net uncontested.  Flyers win 3-2.

Marty Biron played a great game: 39 saves.  You have to give a lot of credit to Timonen: 2 assists and great defense on Ovechkin.  Upshall and Kaponen had the other 2 goals.

Montreal is next!  The consensus: Huge underdogs, but not an insurmountable series.

Flyers clinch playoff birth

In order for the Flyers to make the playoffs, they would have to would have to beet both the Devils and Penguins unless they got some help from Panthers, who would have to beat the Hurricanes.  Considering the Flyers were 1-7 against the Devils this year and they have lost 3 straight games against the Penguins, I wasn’t too optimistic about their chances.  However, they were able to pull through last night and beat the Devils in convincing fashion 3-0, as well as receiving some help from the Panthers who topped the Hurricanes.  The electric crowd in Philadelphia certainly gave the Flyers the extra boost they needed to top the Devils.

The Flyers sit at the 8th seed, but could move into the 7th seed with a win over the Penguins on Sunday, which would mean they’ll be facing either the Penguins or Canadiens in the 1st round depending on who is on top of the standings at the end of the season.  Both teams are tied at 102 points with 1 game left to play.

Breaking: Forsberg returns to the NHL, signs with Avalanche

More on this story soon.  I’m pretty stunned.  I was sure that if Forsberg would return this season, it would be for the Flyers (they are still ahead of the Avalanche in the standings).  I would say the 10-game losing streak and the recent injuries to Gagne and Richards were serious factors.  He would have been great to fill that void.  Imagine Forsberg with a healthy Gagne, Richards, and Hatcher/Rathje.  Typical heartbreak for Philly sports.

The good news: Flyers break 10-game skid in a shootout victory over the Sabres 4-3.  Thank you Briere.  Here is a video of some fisticuffs thrown during the game.

Flyers lose 10th straight and Richards out 3 weeks

From Yahoo:

The Philadelphia Flyers can’t catch a break. After having their losing streak reach a franchise-record 10 games with a 2-1 overtime loss to the Florida Panthers on Saturday, the Flyers learned that All-Star center Mike Richards suffered a torn left hamstring in the third period. After the game, Philadelphia general manager Paul Holmgren said Richards will be sidelined at least three weeks.

At least the Flyers still know how to hit, check out this nasty hit Scottie Upshall laid on the Panthers.  Losing 10 games must really get him pissed off.

My playoff hopes have now been officially crushed.  If the Flyers can’t even win a game with Richards in the lineup, I wonder how long their losing streak will continue without him.  If the Sixers and Flyers could swap records from their last 10 games, that would be perfect.  But no, the Sixers keep winning games.  They are currently 8th in the East and poised to get embarrassed by Boston or Detroit if they keep things up.  Hopefully, these teams’ success can reverse, so the Flyers can sneak into the playoffs and the Sixers get more ping-pong balls so the prayers of Sixers fans can be answered by miraculously landing Michael Beasley or Derrick Rose.

Flyers lose 8 straight games, but there is still hope

To say the Flyers are in a funk is an understatement: the team has now lost 8 straight games.  The first 7 games were losses in regulation (no points).  They were finally able to salvage a point when they lost in a shootout to the Senators last night, 3-2.

The good news: The Flyers were able to acquire an experienced defensemen Jaroslav Modry from the Kings for a 3rd round pick.  Although Modry isn’t the caliber of Tomas Kaberle, a player many Flyers fans were hoping they could get, he’s a solid pick up that will sure up a blueline that is riddled with injuries.

The Flyers, who once occupied the 2nd seed in the East just weeks ago, have now slipped to the 7th seed in the East.  Hopefully, with a few wins to gain some momentum and the return of Gagne and Hatcher to the lineup, the Flyers can finish the season strong and make some noise in the playoffs.  Gagne has said that his concussion is mild and that he expects to return this season.  Gange has said that he’s taking things day-to-day and that the symptoms aren’t as severe as his last concussion.

SCRATCH THAT: Gagne’s concussion specialist has told him to sit out the rest of the regular season AND the playoffs.
